The benefits of having medication delivered

Non-adherence to medication is a major reason why treatments shown to be effective in trials are often less effective in clinical practice.

Medicine home delivery helps improve care by ensuring patients have their Esomeprazole (e.g.Nexium) when they need it, which increases treatment adherence and saves unnecessary trips to traditional pharmacies like Chemist Warehouse, or Priceline.

That’s why 92% of users of the Chemist2U app report that the app is a helpful tool to maintain their healthcare.

Some important information about Nexium (esomeprazole)

Nexium (esomeprazole) may generally be prescribed as a digestive wellness medication for eligible patients. Only a doctor can determine whether this medication is right for you. In the meantime, you can learn some important information about it through this article.

How does Nexium (esomeprazole) work?

Nexium, known as esomeprazole, may be prescribed as reflux relief tablets for individuals diagnosed with reflux oesophagitis, a condition where stomach acid and food flow back into the food pipe, causing discomfort and heartburn.

As a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), this medication’s mechanism of action is to reduce stomach acid, which may offer relief and allow healing to take place, managing gastric issues without disrupting normal digestion.[1]

Those interested in this medication may also want to ask their doctor about other PPIs like Nexole (esomeprazole) and Esopreze (esomeprazole magnesium trihydrate) or other prescription stomach medications like Motilium (domperidone).

One six-month randomised double-blind trial of 375 gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) patients revealed significant recovery rates with esomeprazole 20 mg and 10 mg (78.7% and 54.2%, respectively) compared to a placebo.[2]

Moreover, in eight clinical trials involving 4,495 GERD patients, esomeprazole treatment notably decreased relapse rates and symptoms like heartburn and epigastric pain compared to placebo.[3] Meta-analysis data found that esomeprazole treatment for up to eight weeks provided higher rates of treating erosive GORD, outperforming alternatives such as lansoprazole and pantoprazole.[4]

How do you take Nexium (esomeprazole)?

Nexium (esomeprazole) is taken orally. For optimal effectiveness, store it in a cool place under 25 degrees Celsius and note that it has a shelf life of three years.[5] Your dosage may vary depending on individual conditions, as assessed by your doctor. It is important to follow the guidance of your doctor when using this medication. Always read and follow the instructions on the label carefully.

Who can take Nexium (esomeprazole)?

Nexium (esomeprazole) may generally be prescribed to individuals experiencing frequent heartburn, stomach discomfort, acid regurgitation, and other symptoms associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).[6]

However, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s crucial to consult your doctor before taking this medication, as the impact on pregnant women and infants is still unclear.[7]

Side effects of Nexium (esomeprazole)

Taking Nexium (esomeprazole) can lead to some common, usually mild side effects, such as nausea, constipation, diarrhea, headache, stomach pain, or dry mouth. It may also lead to drowsiness.[8] It’s important to stay informed and monitor your body’s response.

However, if you experience more severe symptoms like blurred vision, mood changes, unusual muscle pain, increased sweating, sleep disturbances, fever, or any unusual changes in your body, please contact your doctor immediately. These symptoms may require prompt medical attention.[9]

Nexium (esomeprazole) and other medications

Nexium (esomeprazole) may interact with certain medications, impacting their effectiveness or how well other medicines work.[10] These include treatments for fungal infections like ketoconazole, anxiety medications such as diazepam, epilepsy drugs like phenytoin, and various antidepressants.

Herbal remedies like St John’s wort, antibiotics like clarithromycin, blood thinners such as warfarin, heart medications like digoxin, arthritis and cancer treatments like methotrexate, and drugs used in organ transplants or cancer treatments may also have interactions. Thus, it’s crucial to discuss all your current medications with your doctor.

Medicines you should not use with Nexium (esomeprazole)

Your doctor may ask that you avoid taking Nexium (esomeprazole) if you are allergic to any proton-pump inhibitor medications. The same may be true for certain medicines like atazanavir and nelfinavir, which are used for treating HIV, or cilostazol, which treats intermittent claudication.[11]

If taking Nexium (esomeprazole) or any digestive disorder medication, it’s essential to inform your doctor about all the medicines you’re currently taking, whether they’re prescribed, over-the-counter, or herbal remedies from an online pharmacy, supermarket, or health food store.
