The benefits of having medication delivered

Non-adherence to medication is a major reason why treatments shown to be effective in trials are often less effective in clinical practice.

Medicine home delivery helps improve care by ensuring patients have their Domperidone (e.g. Motilium) when they need it, which increases treatment adherence and saves unnecessary trips to traditional pharmacies like Chemist Warehouse, or Priceline.

That’s why 92% of users of the Chemist2U app report that the app is a helpful tool to maintain their healthcare.

Some Key Facts About Motilium (domperidone)

Looking for information about Motilium (domperidone) online shouldn’t be a hassle when you already have an upset stomach.

Making your medication easy is our priority here at Chemist2U. With that, we’ve compiled some important facts about Motilium (domperidone) that you should know.

In this article

How does Motilium (domperidone) work?

Motilium, with its generic name, domperidone, is an anti-sickness medicine given to ease symptoms of nausea and vomiting.

It belongs to a class of medications known as dopamine-2 receptor antagonists. Domperidone acts as an antiemetic and prokinetic agent that affects the chemoreceptor trigger zone and motor function of the stomach and small intestine. This means it tightens the muscles at the top of your stomach and relaxes those at the bottom, reducing the likelihood of vomiting.[1]

Moreover, it’s also worth noting that there are other types of digestive disorder medication solutions on the market. One of which is esomeprazole magnesium, which is available under brand names like Nexole, Nexium, and Esopreze.

While esomeprazole magnesium is used primarily for short-term relief from conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux and erosive esophagitis, Motilium (domperidone) may be used for long-term management of nausea and vomiting in recommended doses.[2] It’s crucial, however, to consult with your doctor to ensure it’s suitable for your specific needs, especially for long-term use.

How do you take Motilium (domperidone)?

For adults and adolescents aged twelve years and over, weighing at least 35 kg, the usual motilium dosage is one tablet up to three times a day. Make sure to swallow the tablet whole with water or another liquid, and do not chew it.

Generally, you must take Motilium (domperidone) fifteen to thirty minutes before meals as absorption may be slightly delayed if taken afterwards. It’s important not to continue taking Motilium (domperidone) for more than seven days without consulting your doctor.[3]

It is crucial to follow the prescribed Motilium dosage carefully to ensure the medication works effectively. Always adhere to your doctor’s instructions and read the medication guide provided.

Who can take Motilium (domperidone)?

Motilium (domperidone) is primarily prescribed for alleviating nausea and vomiting in those over eighteen years of age. Additionally, it finds ‘off-label’ use among paediatric gastroenterologists for managing symptoms related to gastroesophageal reflux, dyspepsia, and gastroparesis.[4]

Clinical audits have also indicated that domperidone may be employed to treat nausea and headaches linked with inpatient dihydroergotamine (DHE) infusions. Still, prospective studies are needed to prove the overall efficacy of Motilium (domperidone).[5]

This medication is also sometimes recommended to help increase milk supply in breastfeeding mothers. However, ongoing research is required to establish its effectiveness for this purpose.[6]

If you’re curious about other ‘off-label’ Motilium uses, such as its effectiveness for conditions like heartburn or motion sickness, you should discuss this with your doctor.

While current evidence and clinical practice suggest its safety and utility for a range of symptoms, professional advice is still essential to ensure its appropriate and safe use, tailored to your individual health circumstances.

Side effects of Motilium (domperidone)

A common side effect experienced by more than one in 100 people is a dry mouth. However, this may be typically mild and temporary.

Other less common side effects include a decrease in libido, feelings of anxiety, drowsiness, headaches, diarrhea, itchy skin, unusual milk production, breast pain, or a general sense of weakness.

Though serious side effects are uncommon, they demand immediate attention. These include unusual or uncontrolled movements of muscles or eyes and difficulties with urination. Additionally, while rare, there is a possibility of a serious allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, which requires urgent medical care.[7]

If you experience any side effects, report them to your doctor immediately so they can assess your condition and adjust your treatment if necessary.

Motilium (domperidone) and other medications

It’s crucial to be aware of potential interactions between Motilium (domperidone) and other medications you may be taking, as these can affect how well each medication works or increase the risk of side effects.

Always inform your doctor about all your current medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Particularly, mention if you are on treatments for infections, heart issues, or AIDS/HIV. If your treatment includes domperidone and apomorphine, it’s essential to consult your doctor. They will evaluate your capacity to safely use these medications concurrently.[8]

Medicines you should not use with Motilium (domperidone)

It’s essential to understand that Motilium (domperidone) may not be used with certain medications due to the risk of harmful interactions.

If you’re being treated for fungal infections with drugs like itraconazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole, posaconazole, or voriconazole, your doctor may not advise taking Motilium (domperidone). Similarly, this medication may not be given when you’re on antibiotics such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, or spiramycin.

Those taking medications for heart conditions or high blood pressure, including amiodarone, dronedarone, ibutilide, disopyramide, dofetilide, sotalol, hydroquinidine, or quinidine, may not be prescribed Motilium (domperidone) as well.

Additionally, it may not be combined with treatments for psychoses like haloperidol, pimozide, or sertindole; depression medications such as citalopram or escitalopram; or drugs for gastrointestinal disorders, including cisapride, dolasetron, or prucalopride.[9]

Before starting Motilium (domperidone), ensure to discuss all your current treatments with your doctor.
